Meet Our Team

Dr. Shannon Pope and Dr. Tom Pope, a husband-and-wife team, are both double-board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and have experience and expertise in family-centered care for patients of all ages — from birth to childhood to adulthood to advanced ages.

Prior to relocating to Smithfield, Shannon and Tom practiced Internal Medicine & Pediatrics in Williamsburg, Virginia for two years. They decided to return home to start their own medical practice, raise their children, be closer to their families and long-time friends in the area and most importantly, provide the highest possible caliber of care to their community.

Dr. Shannon Pope was raised in Smithfield and graduated Valedictorian from Smithfield High School in 1990. She attended the College of William & Mary and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Biology in 1994. She then attended Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, and in 1998, she was selected as a member of AOA, the Medical Honor Society. She completed her internship and residency in 2002 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, and is Board Certified in Internal Medical & Pediatrics.

Dr. Tom Pope was raised in Petersburg and graduated from Tidewater Academy in Wakefield 1988. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Chemistry in 1992. He then attended Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, where in 1998, he was selected as a member of AOA, the Medical Honor Society. He completed his internship and residency in 2002 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, and is Board Certified in Internal Medical & Pediatrics.

Morgan Arrington, PA-C

Morgan Arrington, PA-C, was raised in Corapeake, North Carolina. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 with a degree in Biology. She went on to earn her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Bethel University in Paris, Tennessee, graduating in 2016. Morgan is board certified by the NCCPA and is dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-focused care.
Whitney Irvine, FNP-C

Whitney Irvine, FNP-C

Whitney began her career by earning an Associate Degree in Applied Science from Paul D.Camp Community College in 2012, becoming a registered nurse. She furthered her education with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Liberty University in 2016 and a Master of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University in 2020. Whitney completed her Family Nurse Practitioner clinical rotations locally, training with various skilled physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, including several rotations right here at Family Medical Care of Smithfield with Dr. Tom and Dr. Shannon. She is licensed to practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the Virginia Department of Health Professions and is board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. In her free time, Whitney enjoys spending time with her family and can be found most days cheering on her children at the ballfields.

Patients can expect a compassionate and patient-centered approach from Whitney. She values open communication and collaboration, taking into account the input and concerns of each patient she serves.

Jennifer O'Connors, FNP

Jennifer O'Connors, FNP

Jennifer O’Connors is a Family Nurse Practitioner with 28 years of experience, specializing primarily in pediatrics. Originally from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, she earned her BSN and MSN in Critical Care from Old Dominion University and completed her post‑master’s Family Nurse Practitioner certification at Salisbury State University. She has been serving the Hampton Roads community since 2009 and is grateful for the loyal patient relationships she has built throughout her career.

Jennifer and her husband, Phil O’Connors—a registered nurse at Belle Harbour Emergency Department—enjoy a shared commitment to healthcare and family. Together, they enjoy their blended family of four children, two granddaughters, and a grandson on the way. Outside of work, Jennifer loves spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, cooking out, and exploring local restaurants.

She is proud to continue providing compassionate, high‑quality care to families in Smithfield and the surrounding communities.
